Why is there a different spectrum for fluorescent white light than incandescent white light? HELP PLZ!!!?
i really really need some help on this one!!! thankyou guys so much!!
the exact question is: write two hypothesis that explain why you observed a different spectrum for fluorescent white light than for incandescent white light.
An Incandescent Light has a hot filament which basically radiates light in a "black body spectrum." Most of the intensity is in the infra-red region and very little is in the blue. This spectrum is continuous.
Fluorescent lights have a more balanced spectrum (not so much red, and more blue.) This spectrum is mostly a "line" spectrum because the colors are produced by a mixture of several chemicals (the white powder coating the inside of the tube) which fluoresce in shades of red, green and blue. The total looks like white to our eyes. The ionized mercury vapor in the tube produces ultraviolet light which causes the chemicals, called phosphors, to glow. Different brands of fluorescent lights, or "warm white" vs "cool white" will have slightly different tints because of differences in the exact phosphors used and the amounts of each. The warm white lights are redder, and the cool white are bluer. Also, if you carefully look into an operating fluorescent light right next to the metal end cap, you can probably see a faint blue glow inside. That is glow from the mercury vapor. The ultraviolet light produced will not hurt your eyes because most is absorbed by the glass.
