What is the trick to the softball toss boardwalk game?
The game where you have to toss 3 softballs into a plastic bucket. No matter what you do you always misss at least 1 of the balls. Is there a trick to it? Does the person running it pull some lever?
Carnival games that take money from you in exchange for chances to win prizes in games of skill are carefully regulated, and the fairness of these games are checked regularly. If there was a lever to pull, the inspectors would find it, the carnival company that ran such a game would be out of business, and the owner and carney would get a pair of silver bracelets with a short chain between them, a free ride in a police car, fingerpainting lessons, a professional portrait of themselves with a bunch of numbers at the bottom, a complete stranger [self-edited], and an extended stay at the Iron Bar Hotel, where they would be doing laundry, breaking rocks, or stamping license plates All Day.
The bucket is tilted toward you, and the object of the game is to toss the ball into the bucket in such a way that the ball stays in the bucket. If you hit the bottom of the bucket, the ball will simply bounce right back out. So what is the secret?
Here is how you do it. Toss the ball gently underhand so the ball lands on the front lip of the bucket at as steep an angle as possible. If this is done correctly, the ball will bounce off of the front lip of the bucket, then the bottom, then back off the front lip and up. By the time the ball has bounced three times in this way, a vast majority of the kinetic energy in the motion of the ball has dissipated, and the ball will fall right back into the bucket. Of course, making this happen three times in a row isn't easy, and I would recommend you practice this technique extensively before trying it at the carnival -- and taking home a prize. - LJS
